The Junior Planner position is ideally suited to professionals with a minimum of two years of broad experience with the planning system in southern Ontario. The Intermediate Planner position requires a minimum of three to five years of relevant planning experience. This experience should include an excellent working understanding of Provincial plans and policy statements and related Planning Act instruments, including official plans, zoning by-laws, and familiarity with development processes (official plan amendments, draft plans of subdivision, zoning by-law amendments, consents to sever, site plan and minor variances.)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and summarize provincial policy documents, regional and municipal Official Plans, zoning by-laws, and supporting studies;
  • Assist with the preparation of due diligence studies, planning opinion reports, draft official plan, and zoning by-law amendments;
  • Assist with the preparation and submission of complete development approval applications, and assist with the approvals process;
  • Work on short and long-term projects under the guidance of senior planners;
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams;
  • Produce high-quality deliverables for multiple concurrent projects;
  • Exhibit excellent professional judgment, time management, and problem-solving skills required to manage competing deadlines;
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, municipal and agency staff;
  • Attend public meetings and open houses, occasionally outside of regular business hours, as needed, in support of the lead project planner;
  • Assist with day-to-day management of project files and correspondence, including letters, memos, meeting minutes, and emails.

Key Qualifications

  • University degree in urban planning from an accredited planning program or equivalent;
  • Full or candidate membership in OPPI/CIP or eligible to be a member;
  • Registered Professional Planner (RPP) designation or working towards obtaining is considered an asset;
  • Familiarity with and knowledge of the Ontario planning system, including the Planning Act, provincial/municipal planning policies, related plans, and guidelines;
  • In-depth, academic knowledge of planning and design principles, methods, and best practices;
  • Excellent written, oral, and visual communication skills;
  • Strong research and analytical skills, ability to read and interpret development plans;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Experience with public meetings and OLT hearing preparation is considered an asset;
  • Class “G” Driver’s License and regular access to a vehicle are necessary.
