The Town of Markham is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada with a 2006 population of about 260,000 residents. In the early 1990’s MGP acted as the study manager and land use planners on a multi-disciplinary study team retained by the Town to establish a planning and design framework for its new urban downtown core – Markham Centre. Working with urban designers, transit and traffic engineers, environmental consultants and market and financial analysts, the team prepared a Master Plan and Secondary Plan which is used by planning staff and Council to inform decisions regarding growth, development, and built form

Today, Markham Centre is designated as an Urban Growth Centre in Places to Growth: Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe and will be relied upon to accommodate a significant amount of the Town’s projected intensification. Planners from MGP serve as project planners and study coordinators to a number of developers with interests in Markham Centre and are advising them on regional and local Official Plan review and conformity exercises and working with them through approvals processes.
